The Best Options for Upgrading or Customizing Tesla Model 3 Suspension

Since 2017, Tesla Motors has been redefining the electric driving experience with the Model 3, one of the world’s top-selling EVs. With the release of Project Highland in 2023, the iconic mid-size sedan became the most aerodynamic Tesla model, and it continues to deliver electrifying performance with up to 510 horsepower and 546 lb-ft of torque delivered by the Fourth-Generation Drive Unit.

The impressive Tesla Model 3 performance specs extend to its suspension system, which is tuned to promote stability and tight handling at higher speeds. This translates into many drivers noticing that the factory Tesla Model 3 suspension feels particularly rigid. Thankfully, you don’t have to settle for driving with tight handling on a stiff undercarriage.

Tesla Model 3 Upgrades

As the world’s most established EV manufacturer, Tesla has been on the market long enough to develop a comprehensive network of Tier 1 suppliers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The Tesla Model 3 parts catalog is extensive; it appeals to drivers who want to fine-tune, improve, and customize performance. For the reasons mentioned above, the Model 3 factory suspension is one of the tuning aspects most drivers inquire about, and they can find everything from bushings to coilovers and from control arms to shocks, springs, and sway bars.

Some of the major brands offering Tesla Model 3 parts for suspension tuning include BCC Racing, Eibach, EVANNEX, MSS Sports, and Öhlins Racing. Depending on your suspension goals and driving style, you can select Tesla Model 3 coilovers for performance tuning or comfort. For example, many drivers feel that their pre-Highland Model 3s are too stiff at higher speeds; to this end, they can retrofit their EVs with new Frequency Selective Damping parts or replace the Front Upper Control Arm with fresh bushings.

Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), All-Wheel Drive (AWD), and Performance Suspensions

The Model 3 family is not engineered with “one-size-fits-all” performance. Your suspension tuning options depend on the driveline, motor configurations, and battery weights.

RWD and Long Range RWD

RWD models are lighter and handle better when driving over smooth surfaces. When driving over uneven pavement, the front end feels unevenly lighter and prone to understeering. You can correct this with adjustable coilovers or linear-rate lowering springs; moreover, coilover kits that allow a one-inch drop can make your driving experience more precise.

Dual-Motor AWD

This Model 3 trim extends your driving range with a heavier battery pack and an additional motor on the front axle. The extra weight requires a higher spring rate to prevent the car from bottoming out on the bump stops during braking and rapid deceleration. Many drivers dislike the “pogo-like” effect generated by factory dampers, so they shop for comfort-tuned coilovers with adjustable damping for an instant suspension upgrade.

Performance AWD

The fastest and most powerful Model 3 feels perfect to most drivers; however, Tesla engineers left some room for customization and improvement. Starting with the 2024 Model 3 Performance, the new Tesla Adaptive Damping System can be fine-tuned with adjustable sway bars and control arms that reduce the “body-roll” feeling associated with tight cornering at higher speeds. You don’t have to sacrifice the factory “Sport” and “Track” driving modes when installing this upgrade.

Should You Upgrade Your Model 3 Suspension?

Although Tesla is known for its vertically integrated business model of in-house engineering and parts, suspension upgrades will not necessarily void your Model 3’s limited warranty. Tesla can only deny warranty coverage if your tuning upgrades damage their corresponding system. In other words, if the infotainment touchscreen stops working after installing a coilover kit, Tesla must honor the warranty because there is no logical connection to the suspension. What is important for Model 3 suspension upgrades is that you choose a Tesla-approved repair and service center such as Ace Tech Collision Center; this ensures your EV is in the expert hands of properly trained and certified technicians.
